What is a TMJ disorder?
A TMJ disorder affects the way your jaw opens, closes and moves side to side. You have joints on both sides of your jaw. Being diagnosed with TMJ means there is additional stress on this part of the jaw which makes it hard to speak, drink and chew.
Patients with a TMJ disorder can experience alignment problems due to habits like teeth grinding or clenching the jaw. Some patients develop a TMJ disorder due to factors out of their control such as arthritis, an injury or a condition present at birth.
During your free consultation, we will listen to your concerns and the impact that TMJ/TMD has on your life. Using digital diagnostic technology, we take measurements of tooth forces, document the range of motion in the neck, and in some cases, we even measure how wide you can open your mouth comfortably. Our orthodontists will come up with a tailored treatment plan to minimize pressure around the mouth and jaw. Visit one of our offices, and we will find the underlying issue to improve your discomfort.
