Surviving the holidays with orthodontic treatment

The holiday season is filled with travel, family, and lots of good food – but none of that should stand in the way of a healthier smile! Here are a few tips for navigating holiday events and travel while continuing your orthodontic progress:

Remember the basics

It can be difficult to prioritize your oral health when there are so many exciting trips and gatherings. In times like this, just get through the basics! Even if you aren’t able to spend a lot of time on your teeth, remember to brush twice a day and floss every couple of days, just to keep your smile healthy.

Keep a travel kit

If you spend your holiday season on the go, don’t forget to pack for your teeth! A simple travel kit with a spare toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash can make a big difference when you’re on the road.

Enjoy (but be smart!)

The holidays are full of delicious treats – some of which are better for orthodontic treatment than others. Feel free to indulge in holiday desserts like pumpkin pie, ice cream, chocolates, and most of your dinnertime favorites like mashed potatoes, casseroles, and boneless turkey or ham. However, try to avoid the more bracket-dangerous dishes like peanut brittle, candy canes, and any overly sticky baked goods.

Keeping your next appointment

After a long holiday season, the best thing you can do to maintain your orthodontic health is to meet back up with your doctors. Keep your next orthodontist to make sure your celebrating didn’t get in the way of your progress.
