What can cause an overjet?

An overjet is when the upper front teeth are further forward than the lower ones. Overjets are similar to overbites, another type of malocclusion where the upper teeth overlap your lower teeth. The primary difference is that the teeth protrude outwards at an angle for a horizontal misalignment with an overjet, while with an overbite, they’re angled straight down.

Symptoms of overjets

Several factors can cause an overjet, such as overcrowding that pushes your front teeth out, thumb sucking or overuse of pacifiers at a young age. An overjet does more than change the appearance of your smile. These malocclusions can result in many other symptoms, such as the following:

  • Difficulty chewing and eating
  • Speech impediments
  • Increased risk of injury or damage to protruding teeth
  • Irregular appearance
  • Jaw pain

Why fix an overjet?

If you have an overjet, you may be interested in fixing your alignment and creating a healthier smile. Overjets are sometimes known as “buck teeth” for the way they protrude from your mouth. Many people are interested in corrections that will readjust their teeth for aesthetic purposes.

With an overjet, your jaw may be misaligned. This misalignment can lead to jaw discomfort, pain and other challenges. Additionally, your front teeth are at a greater risk of injury when they extend from the rest of your teeth. Fixing an overjet with corrective treatment creates stronger teeth that are less susceptible to damage.
