How does an overbite develop?

An overbite may develop for a few reasons. Overbites often form when the jaw’s size or shape causes teeth to crowd. These concerns can be present from birth or they can develop over time.

For instance, a person’s facial structure may be more likely to cause an overbite. There are also conditions like Goruzan syndrome, basal cell syndrome, gigantism or acromegaly that can limit the room teeth have to align properly.

An overbite can develop over time due to outside factors like oral habits and trauma. Thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier use and nail-biting can cause forces that gradually alter the jaw’s shape. Losing front teeth or enduring a severe jaw injury may also cause an overbite.

Signs of overbite

The most noticeable indicator of an overbite is that the upper jaw protrudes out beyond the lower jaw. There will be a 2-3-millimeter horizontal gap between the front teeth. In some cases, the lower front teeth will touch the roof of the mouth when closed.

Does an overbite need fixing?

While many patients can live with an overbite, it’s often necessary to treat the issue with an orthodontist. An overbite may complicate normal functions and make cleaning your teeth more difficult. As a result, those with excessive overbites often experience issues like:

  • Jaw pain or stiffness.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Speech disorders.
  • Pain while chewing.
  • Frequent earaches.
  • Gum disease.

Individual treatments for overbite

There are a few non-surgical ways orthodontists can treat an overbite. At Amazing Smiles Orthodontics, we’ll work closely with you to determine which of the following options best suits your situation:

Metal braces: Traditional braces can gradually pull crowded teeth from their misaligned position into a straighter one.
Ceramic braces: These braces use the same time-tested technology as traditional braces, but with one difference — they feature inconspicuous clear brackets.
Invisalign® aligners: Amazing Smiles Orthodontics is a Diamond+ Invisalign® provider. You’ll wear a series of removable clear aligner trays — each closer to your ideal smile than the last. The trays gently push your teeth into place over a few months. Invisalign® is best for minor overbites.
